A BRIEF HISTORY
In November of 1974, the Nugget Department Store premiered as the first shop to open in the Nugget Mall. It ca rried men's, women's and children's clothing, plus bedding, sheets and giftware.
Later changing into the Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, the department store was started by Bill Flint, who saw malls as the wave of the future.
At one point, other mall developers tried to back out, but Flint wouldn't let them, said his son and current Nugget co-owner Ron Flint.
" Without his pushing them," he said, " the mall may not have happened."
In January 1975, Zales Jewelers, Pizzazz - forerunner to The Broiler - and Martha's Flowers became part of the Nugget Mall. A second mall followed the trend by opening in 1977.
